As I've said before, I spend a lot of time listening to today's horrible horrible pop music. Such is the lot of the parental taxi driver. (allowing the passengers to choose the music apparently pacifies them to the point where one can drive with a modicum of safety.)
In addition to being a long-term music obsessive, I was also an English major, so I tend to overthink what's meant to be a pretty disposable, thought-free medium. (The fact that the same three or four songs are repeated endlessly helps with this too.) My thoughts on Tik Tok by Ke$ha:
This is the song I hear the most, so I have the most thoughts about it:
"Before I leave Brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack/cause when I leave for the night I aint comin' back.." Well, I guess it would probably kill the germs that cause gingivitis, but I still think even the horrible Tom's of Maine fennel flavor would be preferable.
Also, the leave/leave repetition bugs me. As much as I complain about the copy editing process, this is where pop musicians need a copy editor to circle both "leave"s in red pencil and write "fix rep" in the margin. It would work just as well to say "when I go out for the night."
"The dudes are linin' up cause they hear we got swagger/but we kick em to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger."
Uh, the reputation of having swagger is not what gets the dudes to line up. It's more likely that they're lining up because your breath reeks of Jack Daniels and they think you're drunk enough to have low standards.
Also, um...
Having said all that, the chorus is freaking brilliant, and I actually don't hate this song despite hearing it at least twice any time I have to drive the kids anywhere, which is a couple of times a day.
