On Saturday I was doing some Christmas shopping and found myself in a store that actually wasn't playing Christmas music. (And my new favorite Christmas song, by the way, is Manic Hispanic's "Santa Got Run Over By My Chevy." Fantastic!)
Anyway, what they were actually playing was Hootie and the Blowfish covering "The Goodbye Girl." I mean..Good God, this is really one of the worst songs I've ever heard in my life. I mean, not that the original was any great shakes to begin with, but the waves of lameness permeating the store as this cover played were just oppressive.
I mean, is the David Gates and Bread catalog really crying out to be covered? I remember that Boy George had an attempted comeback with a reggaefied cover of Bread's "Everything I Own". The Boy, of course, is now making his living as a DJ. Perhaps the Bread cover is a nasty trick that producers or somebody foists on artists on the decline just to put the final nail in the coffin of their career.
A little research reveals that this cover is at least two years old, and I heard it for the first time two days ago. With luck, I'll never hear it again. And my Winter Solstice wish for you, to bring some light to this, the darkest time of the year, is that you never have to hear it either.
